About the camelCase Converter

This camelCase converter turns any text into a camelCase identifier as you type: the first word lower case, every following word starting with a capital, no spaces or separators. user_account_id becomes userAccountId, Order Line Item becomes orderLineItem and max-retry-count becomes maxRetryCount. Switch to PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case or CONSTANT_CASE with one click when you need a different convention.

The converter splits words on spaces, underscores, hyphens and other punctuation, and also on existing case boundaries. That means you can paste an identifier that is already in camelCase or PascalCase and convert it cleanly, and runs of capitals are treated as acronyms: XMLHttpRequest splits into xml, http and request. Capitals inside each word are normalised, so API_KEY becomes apiKey rather than aPIKEY.

camelCase is the standard for variables, functions and object properties in JavaScript and TypeScript, for fields and methods in Java and C#, and for JSON keys in many APIs, including Google's JSON style guide. It is the case you need when data from a snake_case database or a Python backend crosses into a JavaScript frontend.

The conversion happens entirely in your browser; nothing you paste is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type the text or identifier you want to convert.
  2. The camelCase result appears immediately and updates as you edit.
  3. Click copy to put the result on your clipboard.
  4. Click PascalCase for class and type names, or any other case to switch the output.

Examples

  • user_account_id → userAccountId
  • max-retry-count → maxRetryCount
  • Order Line Item → orderLineItem
  • XMLHttpRequest → xmlHttpRequest
  • API_KEY → apiKey

Where camelCase is the convention

  • JavaScript and TypeScript: variables, functions, methods and object properties.
  • Java and Kotlin: methods, fields and local variables.
  • C#: local variables and parameters (public members use PascalCase).
  • Swift and Dart: variables, functions and properties.
  • JSON APIs: many public APIs and Google's JSON style guide use camelCase keys.

camelCase versus PascalCase

Both join words without separators and capitalise each new word. The only difference is the first letter: camelCase starts lower case (orderTotal), PascalCase starts upper case (OrderTotal). By convention PascalCase is used for classes, types, interfaces, React components and, in C#, public members, while camelCase is used for everything inside them.

Frequently asked questions

What is camelCase?

A naming style where words are joined without spaces, the first word is lower case and each following word starts with a capital letter, such as totalPriceWithTax.

How are acronyms handled?

A run of capitals is treated as one word, so XMLHttpRequest becomes xmlHttpRequest and userID becomes userId. Some style guides keep acronyms capitalised; adjust by hand if yours does.

Can I convert camelCase back to snake_case?

Yes. Paste the camelCase identifier and click snake_case; the converter splits on the capital letters.

Are numbers kept?

Yes. Digits stay attached to the word they follow, so address line 2 becomes addressLine2.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs locally in your browser.
